New Equinor Gas Discovery in the North Sea Could Supply Poland via the Baltic Pipe

Equinor and Poland’s energy group ORLEN have announced a significant new natural gas discovery in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea, with the potential to strengthen Poland’s energy security through supplies delivered via the Baltic Pipe.

The discovery, named Sissel, is located in production license PL1137 and is estimated to contain between 6.3 and 28.3 million barrels of oil equivalent, primarily natural gas with condensate. The partners expect the field to deliver around 1 billion cubic meters of gas.

The project is strategically important for ORLEN, which has recently recorded record-high gas demand in Poland – up to 100 million cubic meters per day during peak periods. The company underlined the crucial role of Norwegian gas in ensuring stable supplies for industry, businesses and households.

Sissel is located just five kilometers from the Utgard field and may be developed as a tie-back to existing infrastructure connected to the Sleipner complex, significantly reducing investment costs and enabling a faster production start-up.

  • Operator: Equinor (50%)
  • Partner: ORLEN (50%)
  • Distance from Stavanger: approx. 250 km
  • Well depth: 4,359 meters
