IGB Pipeline Eyes Expansion to 5 Billion Cubic Meters

The operator of the Greece–Bulgaria gas interconnector, ICGB, is moving forward with plans to expand the pipeline’s annual capacity from 3 to 5 billion cubic meters. The company is currently assessing market interest as part of a non-binding phase under EU regulations.
The move aims to boost regional energy security and diversify gas supplies in Southeast Europe. The upgrade would strengthen Bulgaria’s access to non-Russian gas sources, including Azerbaijani deliveries and liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Greek terminals.
ICGB noted that increasing capacity would support both Bulgaria and neighboring countries in their transition toward a more resilient and competitive energy market. The results of the current assessment will determine the next steps, including technical and regulatory approvals for the potential expansion.
If realized, the project will further position IGB as a key energy route in the Balkans, linking regional gas networks and contributing to long-term supply stability across the area.
