33% Surge in Gas Consumption in Spain Following 2025 Blackout

Spain recorded a sharp increase in natural gas use for electricity generation following the major blackout on April 28, 2025, Reuters reported, citing gas grid operator Enagás. According to the company, gas consumption by power plants rose by around 33% in 2025 as grid operators turned to more stable generation sources to ensure better voltage control. Overall natural gas demand in the country reached 372 terawatt-hours, marking a 7.4% increase compared to the previous year. Gas exports to France climbed by approximately 59%, while Spain’s total gas exports increased by 17%.
